The NFL’s second set of roster cuts is here, and the Chicago Bears’ maneuvering to get to 80 players has begun.
Dazz Newsome, a sixth-round pick in Ryan Pace’s 2021 NFL Draft class, is on his way out the door:
This isn’t much of a surprise. Newsome wasn’t having the best preseason or training camp (reports of a bad drop were probably just the latest sign this was coming). And while he did make a nice touchdown grab in the exhibition opener, he also muffed a punt return earlier in that afternoon. There was another muff in Preseason Week 2, although that was more of a result of Newsome’s own teammate, De’Montre Tuggle, bumping into him. Nevertheless, that’s the end of the line for Newsome in Chicago.
Newsome had fun college tape and a few splash moments in his brief time on last year’s roster. He’ll probably land on someone’s practice squad when the smoke clears. But with receivers jostling for position ahead of him on the depth chart, Newsome might’ve been an easy cut for this new Bears brass.
Per my calculations, the Newsome departure brings the Bears to 84 players. Which means four more cuts are coming. Practice begins at 1:30 p.m. CT and rosters have to be settled by 3 p.m. CT, which has us following cut watch.
