The Philadelphia Eagles will likely regret passing on wide receiver Justin Jefferson for a long time. To add insult to injury, they’re now trading the receiver they took one pick in front of him (Jalen Reagor) to the team that drafted him, the Minnesota Vikings.
Adam Schefter reported that amid the flurry of roster transactions in the NFL this afternoon, the Eagles are sending Reagor, the 21st pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a pair of draft picks.
The Eagles will receive a 2023 seventh-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick from Minnesota. As Adam Schefter explained, the 2024 fourth-rounder can deescalate to a fifth-rounder if certain performance marks aren’t met by Reagor.
Reagor has struggled in his first two seasons with the Eagles after being taken in the first round by Philly. The former TCU star wideout has only 62 catches for 676 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons.
Just yesterday, Eagles GM Howie Roseman was asked about the team’s decision not to cut Reagor before the deadline to finalize their initial 53-man roster for the 2022 season, and Roseman had some complimentary things to say about Reagor to justify their decision:
“I think when you look at Jalen, one of the things that one of our scouts said to me today is he was one of the only guys that practiced every day,” Roseman told reporters. “The guy brought it every day. He worked on his craft. He had a great attitude, great energy. Obviously, he’s a talented guy. He’s 23 years old. We’re going to do whatever we think is in the best interest of the team, and we felt like there was no doubt in our mind that he deserved a role on this team.”
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was asked to share his thoughts from a football standpoint and shared a similar sentiment:
“I just felt like he made plays this summer, and it started right from the beginning, from day one of training camp, and it continued on throughout the practices that we had,” Sirianni said. “You could definitely see the explosion that — he’s never lost that, right? He’s had this explosion in his body, and he uses it to separate from the defense. I just thought he had a good camp and he made plays and he was more consistent this year throughout training camp.”
Roughly 24 hours later, they’ve apparently had a change of heart. It’s a rough business, folks.
