The Athletic Dubs David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert Fantasy Football Sleepers In 2022

Chicago Bears

While many national pundits have the Bears losing a bunch this season (including SI’s 3-14 prediction this week), some of the fantasy football writers over at The Athletic see plenty of value in their two top running backs.

Jake Ciely put together a massive staff project at The Athletic a couple of weeks ago where fantasy football writers there pick their sleepers for this season, and two of them targeted David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert as backs to have on your roster.

But the problem is, they can’t agree on which back will have the lion’s share of the touches out of the Bears backfield this season. KC Joyner thinks David Montgomery will remain entrenched atop the Bears backfield depth chart this season and calls him a “low-end RB1” that can be had in the third round in most drafts.

Alex Kroff thinks that Khalil Herbert might be a better fit in the Bears new offense under Luke Getsy, and thinks that Herbert will eventually be the RB1 in Chicago.

Here’s what the two had to say about each Bears back:

KC Joyner

David Montgomery, RB, CHI — Montgomery checks nearly all the boxes needed for RB1 contention. He rates fifth in the league in scrimmage plays over the past three years and eighth in RB receptions in that span and should still be the lead back in this offense. Chicago’s run blockers posted a solid 38.0 percent mark last year in my good blocking rate metric that measures how often an offensive blocking wall gives its ball carriers quality run blocking, a number that could improve with the off-season additions the Bears made in that area. Add in the most favorable run defense schedule heading into the 2022 season, and Montgomery is a potential low-end RB1 who fantasy managers can acquire as late as the end of the third round.

Alex Korff

Khalil Herbert, RB, CHI — He’s the soon-to-be RB1 for the Chicago Bears. There, now that I have the clickbait out of the way let’s talk about Herbert. I don’t think he will be the Week 1 RB1 for the Bears, but I think he is very talented. The new coaching staff in Chicago might be more open to a split backfield that could give Herbert flex appeal. An injury to David Montgomery makes Herbert a solid starter for your team. I think Montgomery does a lot of things very well, but Herbert might fit a new offensive scheme better and could easily get more work this year. I am grabbing him everywhere I can. He is going late in drafts and is the perfect target for zero RB strategies. He is a great bench piece for how I like to construct teams.

Well, I sat out fantasy football this year (for lack of desire to play, even after back-to-back runner-up seasons), so I couldn’t care less about it. But, I know plenty do, so I bring you this today.

Still, I will say this… it’s a nice problem to have for the Bears in the real-world scheme of things.
