In a report that surprisingly has nothing (yet) to do with Bill Belichick’s nefarious ways, the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reports the NFL is investigating if someone was filming the Dolphins’ practice in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Video of the Dolphins practicing at the University of Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium one day before they were set to face the Bengals on Thursday Night Football made the rounds on social media. But it might all be for nothing.
That’s because once the team noticed people watching their walkthrough, Head Coach Mike McDaniel took the trickery to another level. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has the details of the Dolphins’ one-upmanship of a failed Spygate mission:
We knew Mike McDaniel was on one when he was dropping Mike Jones references at press conferences. But we didn’t know he had it like this. McDaniel is on some 3-D checkers stuff while wannabe spies are out here doing all that work for nothing.
It’s almost like a scene out of the movie Little Giants:
This is incredible! They’ve got the guards in the backfield. The center’s on the right. And the quarterback isn’t even there!
As Bears fans who attend training camp at Halas Hall can attest, the NFL is annoyingly persistent about filming practices. We’ll see what (if anything) comes out of this bit of NFL drama.
