Michael Badgley’s journey to join the Chicago Bears was a wild one. He won a tryout on Friday, signed to the practice squad on Saturday, and went 4-for-4 on field goals on Sunday.
But on Monday, the Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports the Bears cut Badgley:
From unemployed, to tryout champ, to nailing all your kicks against the unforgiving New Jersey wind, to unemployed. All in a four-day stretch. Wow.
I guess accounting for 100 percent of a team’s scoring output doesn’t get you what it used to.
There are two notes that might serve as consolation. Firstly, that Cairo Santos was back at Halas Hall. Santos’ return makes Badgley expendable in Chicago. C’mon, not even the Bears are carrying two kickers on their active roster. And the other worthwhile takeaway is that Badgley’s performance with the Bears will likely land him another gig soon. Perhaps giving Badgley this showcase will bring on some good karma for Chicago’s football team. They could sure use it!
In the end, Badgley walks away as the most accurate kicker in Bears history (min. 4 attempts). How many kickers can say they hold that record for a charter franchise?
