Not that it should come as a surprise to anyone after last week’s showing, but the Chicago Bears plan on opening the playbook for quarterback Justin Fields.
And, hey, they better keep it open after scoring a season-high 33 points on Monday Night Football.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport hears the Bears are expected to continue using Fields’ versatility and athleticism while deploying an offensive attack that utilizes his passing and running skills:
It seems as if the Chicago Bears may have found their winning formula for Justin Fields coming off what may have been the best game of his young career against the Patriots — 179 passing yards, 82 rushing yards. He was unleashed. Really creating all sorts of problems for this Patriots defense. Expect more of the same from the Chicago Bears today. There was a lot of really fun stuff from offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. One, QB runs stolen from college football. Another counter play they actually stole from the Baltimore Ravens that they ran with Lamar Jackson. Those are the types of fun things you’re going to see today.
In other words, Luke Getsy is going to continue doing the things Luke Getsy said he’d do when he was hired.
GIMME MORE!
Receiver Darnell Mooney was loving on the offense during the offseason, saying that “it makes sense” — which felt equal parts like a shot at the old regime and a vote of confidence in the new guy’s offensive concepts. And I was digging Fields’ description of the offense, saying that plays were built off each other. We hadn’t seen much of it in the first few weeks of the season, but things had been trending better of late. Then, the win on Monday Night Football put everything on display. It was a thing of beauty. But the only thing left is to find out if they can do it again.
At minimum, it sure sounds like they’re going to give it a try. Go get ’em!
