This is shaping up to be an epic NFL Trade Deadline.
And to think, we still have up until 3 p.m. to cut some deals.
But I’m not sure if we’ll get anything as wild as this featuring Calvin Ridley going from the Falcons to the Jaguars — WHILE SERVING A YEAR-LONG SUSPENSION.
Details from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport:
What a facinating and layered deal these two sides have made.
The Falcons are trading Ridley, who is serving a massive suspension for gambling on NFL games while away from the team last year. And in return, Atlanta is getting some juicy draft capital. It is fun, complicated, and ultimately, an intriguing way to go about trading a player who has tremendous upside and potential but could also sink at any time.
But for the Jaguars, it feels like a net win. Granted, it feels like a Jaguars-y thing to do when you’re trading for a player who is currently serving a suspension. But after the Urban Meyer debacle, what’s weird to us is the norm for Jacksonville. And I suppose that is what makes that team fun to follow from afar. There is always something cooking with the Jags. Best-case scenario, they got a Pro Bowl caliber receiver for a second-round pick. Worst-case scenario, they dealt for a player who doesn’t live up to the billing. But if that worst-case scenario plays out, then the draft capital going Atlanta’s way won’t be all that hot.
We’ve still got some time before the NFL trade portal closes. Who’s got next?
