I’ve had my hand in writing some obituaries over the years. But it doesn’t make writing them any easier. And it sure as heck doesn’t mean I like writing them.
Nevertheless, we march on.
Mike Leach, one of college football’s most unique characters and head coaches died on Monday night. Leach — who put up a 158-107 record with his most notable work coming at Mississippi State, Washington State, and Texas Tech — was just 61 years old. His offenses put up big numbers and his press conference quotables are up there with the greats. Leach will certainly be missed in football circles.
The outpouring of Leach memorials has been equal parts heartwarming and entertaining. So, in lieu of a traditional type of online obit, let’s see what others are sharing:
Leach was a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year winner and won the Big 12’s top coaching honors once. But it is clear to me that his legacy will be about more than wins and losses. May his family find peace in these tough times. And may we some day unearth another football coach who seemed to have as much fun with the game as Leach did.
