One of Matt Eberflus’ top assistants is getting a head-coaching opportunity this offseason.
No, there isn’t someone leaving for greener NFL pastures.
However, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reports that Chicago Bears Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy is coaching the American team at the 2023 Senior Bowl:
A Bears offensive coach getting this chance isn’t something I’m taking for granted. Moreover, I’m floored thinking about a Bears offensive coach getting to have this moment. Simply put, Chicago’s football team hasn’t had a bunch of offensive-leaning coaches who were worthy of this honor. The way I see it, this is a testament to the Getsy hire by Eberflus and GM Ryan Poles.
This is a unique opportunity for Getsy. Last year, Getsy was getting head coaching interviews before landing with the Bears as their offensive coordinator and lead play-caller. One year later, Getsy is getting an opportunity to try his hand at being a head coach (albeit on a smaller scale). At a minimum, this is a cool test run for Getsy as he gets some on-the-job training before next year’s interviewing cycle.
But it is not just Getsy set to benefit from this. Think about the opportunity Getsy is getting to put an eyes-on look on a number of notable draft prospects. Some of whom could land on the Bears’ radar with a good showing at the Senior Bowl. The information Getsy gets during Senior Bowl week (and in the game itself!) could be valuable for Poles. This is such a win-win situation for the Bears. And I’m nerding out thinking about how they can leverage the ample insight that might come from Getsy’s Senior Bowl trip.
The Senior Bowl takes place on Feb. 4.
