ESPN’s Todd McShay Hints There Will Be a Bidding War to Get Bears’ No. 1 Pick
When Colts GM Chris Ballard said he would do “whatever it takes” to get a quarterback, it should’ve sounded alarms at Halas Hall. Ballard’s candid commentary put him right in the crosshairs of a potential swap with the Bears for the No. 1 overall pick. And with that, the rumor mill began churning.
But it isn’t stopping any time soon.
Moreover, it sounds like the Colts aren’t the only team willing to risk it all for a QB.
Heck, they aren’t even the only AFC South team ready to risk it for the biscuit.
“Every team that needs a quarterback wants to get to that No. 1 spot,” said ESPN analyst Todd McShay, who also shared his belief that the Texans will “do everything they can” to move up in the draft. And as an added bonus, McShay thinks the Colts will be a driving force behind Houston wanting to move up.
More from McShay:
“The Colts, they are done with veteran quarterbacks who come in and don’t fit the bill. They have a great roster. A great roster on both sides of the ball. They have a run game. They have a solid defense. They need to get that quarterback. … Move up. Whatever it takes. Next year’s 2. Next year’s 1. My point is that No. 1 pick is going to be worth a lot.”
Giggity! This is exactly what I’ve been wanting for the Bears. Two teams in the same division jockeying for the No. 1 spot makes for tremendous content. And for the Bears, it should make for some intriguing offers. How many picks could the Bears extract from the Texans just because the Colts are hanging in the weeds? Could Chicago shop Houston’s offer back to Indy? And what about teams like the Raiders and Panthers? Where do they fit in the mix? It all adds up to Bears GM Ryan Poles being in the catbird’s seat. Ideally, he’ll leverage that positioning to get a boatload of picks in return.
The NFL Draft is 89 days away. And business will soon be picking up!
