There hasn’t been much “off” time for Dave Borgonzi this offseason.
The Chicago Bears linebackers coach was just at the Senior Bowl with Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy. And I’m sure he had eyes on the Super Bowl, where his brother Mike — a Chiefs executive — just won his second ring. And soon, Borgonzi will be interviewing for a promotion with another team.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Borgonzi is interviewing with the Arizona Cardinals for their vacant defensive coordinator position:
Borgonzi has been with Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus for the last five years, with four of those coming while the two were in Indianapolis. And while the duo’s work together dates back to their time with the Colts, it could be time for Borgonzi to carve out his own path. Borgonzi’s experience coaching linebackers like Shaquille Leonard and Roquan Smith are nice bullet points on his résumé. But so is rookie Jack Sanborn’s glow-up from UDFA signing to starting linebacker as a rookie. I’m not sure if Borgonzi is a slam-dunk pick to get the gig in Arizona. However, it is always neat to see someone on the Bears get interest from elsewhere.
We’ll keep an eye on this one. Because while the Bears’ coaching staff appears to be finalized, Borgonzi’s departure would create a new opening.
