If it feels like we’ve been discussing the Chicago Bears’ needs in the trenches forever, just know you’re not alone.
Heck, yesterday we were exploring the possibility of a Leonard Floyd reunion in Chicago. Just in case you were curious to know how down bad we were for defensive line help. And even if Floyd wasn’t your cup of tea, shot of whisky, or drink of choice, there was no denying that (1) the Bears needed help on the line and (2) there were ample options to choose from in free agency. Sure, the NFL Draft is coming up, but I’ve been thinking that it would be nice for GM Ryan Poles to add some help before we got to draft day.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears have done just that with his reporting that Chicago is signing former Houston Texans defensive lineman Rasheem Green:
Green, 25, has played a little bit of everywhere along the defense front. A third-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2018, Green lined up at defensive end and as a pass-rushing linebacker. His best season came in 2021 in which he made the most of 16 starts and a career-best 846 snaps. Green came up with 6.5 sacks, 15 quarterback hits, and 6 tackles-for-loss that year. He would go on to parlay that into a one-year deal with the Texans, but saw his starts and playing time take a back seat. Green still came up with 3.5 sacks, 8 QB Hits, and 5 tackles-for-loss while playing just 53 percent of the defensive snaps in Houston. So that is nice to know that he can still be productive while playing in a pinch.
Green becomes the third notable free agent signing to join the defensive line this offseason. At least, he will once this deal becomes officially official. The Bears could be looking at a front four of Green, Andrew Billings, Justin Jones (a free agent signing from last year), and DeMarcus Walker. Throw in T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds, and we’re looking at a front seven with six new players who weren’t starting for the Bears in Week 1 last year. Now that is what a makeover looks like. And to think, more could be coming.
UPDATE (2:04 PM CT) — And … he’s already officially official:
