The Bears Used Their First Second-Round Pick to Take Florida DT Gervon Dexter Sr.

Chicago Bears

One night after using their first-round pick to address the offensive line, the Chicago Bears are using their first selection on Day 2 to fill a hole on defense.

Gervon Dexter Sr., a defensive tackle from Florida, is the pick for Chicago:

If you’ll recall, the Bears received this pick as part of the Roquan Smith trade ahead of the deadline. I’d say this is a nifty use of that resource, especially with the type of upside Dexter possesses. Because, as the NFL Network broadcast pointed out after the Bears made the pick, Dexter was on par with Eagles first-rounder Jalen Carter coming out of high school. That is to say that Dexter sure has a lot of talent. But it will be up to the Bears to get it out of him on a consistent basis.

Dexter, 21, played collegiately at Florida and checked in at 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds. While he plays defensive tackle, his role figures to be as a 1-technique defensive tackle. This is more of a run-stuffer role, but that isn’t to say it won’t be an important spot to fill. Chicago’s defense let opponents run wild on them all year long. Even before Roquan and Robert Quinn were sent away in trades. Hopefully, Dexter’s presence helps plug some of those holes.
