Is Hopkins a Chicago Fit? Kmet Goes Back to School, Rookies Visit Wrigley, and Other Bears Bullets

I’m making my version of these Red Velvet Chocolate Blossom cookies for friends this afternoon. It’ll be my first crack at this, but I trust myself enough to get it done.

  • Nothing like that holiday weekend news dump to catch my eye. But we should probably address the elephant in the room after DeAndre Hopkins’ release from the Arizona Cardinals:
  • So much for Cardinals Head Coach Jonathan Gannon not being worried about DeAndre Hopkins coming into voluntary workouts, per PFT. This isn’t to say that played a factor in his cut. In fact, this has long felt like a release was inevitable. But the timing of Hopkins’ release in conjunction with Gannon’s comments is undeniably funny.
  • No time for Hopkins to laugh. He should be too busy being recruited to laugh. In fact, an old friend is already on the case:
  • It isn’t the offseason unless Cordarrelle Patterson is trying to recruit a high-profile player to his squad. I’m convinced Patterson will make a great GM someday. He certainly has an eye for talent.
  • As for the Bears fit, I’m struggling to come to a firm position. Because, on the one hand, adding someone with Hopkins’ résumé would make Chicago’s passing offense look fun as heck. A receivers’ room featuring Hopkins, DJ Moore, Darnell Mooney, Chase Claypool, Tyler Scott, Velus Jones Jr., Equanimeous St. Brown, and Dante Pettis would be deep as heck. That’s the kind of WRs room you’d dream of building in a Madden video game. Giving Justin Fields that type of weaponry is the stuff we dream of at night. And I bet Fields wouldn’t mind having another option to throw to at camp. With just that being said, I’m all for bringing him in. Guys with six 1,000-yard receiving seasons, five Pro Bowl campaigns, and three first-team All-Pro nods don’t grow on trees. And they certainly don’t hit the market all that often.
  • But on the other hand, Hopkins might not be the *PERFECT* fit that his stat page suggests. Hopkins hasn’t put up a 1,000-yard receiving season or made a Pro Bowl since 2020. And he hasn’t gotten All-Pro recognition since 2019. Last year, Hopkins missed six games due to a PED suspension. Plus, there was a hamstring injury that cost him three games in the middle of the 2021 season and a torn MCL that took him out starting in Week 14. Hopkins will be 31 in June, which puts him on the infamous “wrong side of 30” discussion. This isn’t to say Hopkins is cooked, but signing him isn’t without risk. And because I’m not sure if the Bears are in a position to make a high-risk add, I just can’t grasp him as a Bears fit. But, hey, it was worth having the discussion.
  • Patrick discusses other teams as potential Hopkins fits, while also noting that Chicago doesn’t quite seem to fit what Hopkins is looking for in a new team. Again … it’s still worth discussing the possibility. No stone left unturned, right?
  • There is still time to vote in this poll:
  • Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds pops up on this Bleacher Report list of the most overrated players. It’s a position-by-position look at players who folks might be too high on. But also, Edmunds shows up on a Bleacher Report list of eight players primed to make a leap into All-Pro status. The duality of man in one convenient Bullet. Our expectations for Edmunds deserve a full-on post, but not on a Saturday afternoon of a holiday weekend. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to deep diving on Edmunds. That prospect crush from 2018 hasn’t faded one bit. And now we get to see him play for the Bears. That’s fun!
  • Also fun: Cole Kmet going back to school to finish the job:
  • It is awesome seeing guys go back to school. But more than that, it is neat to hear about their collegiate exploits. For instance, I would’ve never pegged Kmet as a political science major. And I definitely wasn’t expecting him to declare Latinx poetry as a favorite class. Fascinating stuff in the video above.
  • I wish the Bears rookies would’ve gotten a better game than what we were given by the Cubs on Friday:
  • Happy anniversary to my favorite baseball play ever:
  • Shout out to Jose Canseco, who is celebrating (?) this an all-time great moment in baseball history’s 30th anniversary:
  • Oof. I hate that it has to be this way:
  • Over at BN Blackhawks, Tab goes hunting for trade targets on the RFA market who make sense as potential Chicago hockey fits.
