Hard Knocks star Austin Reed was waived by the Bears on Tuesday when they trimmed their roster down to the required 53 players, but he will stick around in Chicago for a while longer after clearing waivers and signing a practice squad contract with the Bears this afternoon.
WSCR’s Chris Emma was the first to report the move this afternoon:
Hard Knocks Star Austin Reed is Sticking Around
The undrafted quarterback out of Western Kentucky turned in a strong exhibition season performance, posting a passer rating of 117.4. Reed was cut with fellow backup Brett Rypien on Tuesday, but he was largely expected to return to the Bears on the practice squad.
Reed had one of the funnier moments in last night’s episode of Hard Knocks when he delivered a funny victory speech to the Bears huddle during their victory over the Kansas City Chiefs last week.
“Hey, we talk about legendary teams,” Reed told his huddle. “We talk about the Patriots … we talk about the Legion of Boom … we talk about the ’85 Bears … [but] they’re going to talk about the ’24 preseason Bears!”
Reed completed 12 of 16 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown during the preseason and will now serve as the Bears scout team quarterback and the emergency third option on game days. Reed signed as an undrafted free agent after throwing for 8,086 yards and 71 touchdowns in his last two college seasons at Western Kentucky.
