The Friday Chicago Bears injury report is always the most telling, for better or worse.
Today’s injury report share from the Bears provides updates on a handful of key players:
- Wide receiver Keenan Allen (heel) is listed as questionable. The questionable designation might make some folks feel uneasy. And I get it. But maybe it’ll make you feel better knowing that Allen went from limited participation on Wednesday and Thursday to being a full-go on Friday.
- Defensive end Montez Sweat (toe) also went from being limited earlier in the week to full participation on Friday. Sweat is questionable to play on Sunday, too, but I feel good about him and Allen being available in Week 1.
- Fellow defensive end DeMarcus Walker was limited for a second consecutive practice with a groin injury. His questionable status is more of a traditional 50-50 shot (at last until Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus shares an update when he meets with the media at Halas Hall).
- A third defensive end, Darrell Taylor, is listed as questionable. Taylor pops up on the injury report for the first time as a DNP because of a foot injury. Hopefully, it isn’t too serious.
- An update from The Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain:
- Rookie offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie getting a full participation designation under his belt is an encouraging sign. I still think the Yale product will be treated to the redshirt status this season, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Bears use him in heavy packages when the offense needs more beef blocking along the offensive line.
- Back-to-back full practices for offensive lineman Ryan Bates is a good sign in its own right. Coleman Shelton has the center spot locked down and Teven Jenkins is healthy heading into Week 1. But at least Bates will be available if anything happens to either of those starters.
- The only player listed as out on the injury report is defensive tackle Zacch Pickens, who has been sidelined for a while now. Pickens’ injury helped necessitate the Bears’ trade acquisition of defensive tackle Chris Williams at the end of the preseason.
All in all, things could be worse for the Bears. Heck, I’d venture to say that this injury report is pretty good. As someone who’s been compiling these going on seven years now, I’ve definitely seen worse days.
