It came as a surprise to see Christian McCaffrey miss the San Francisco 49ers Week 1 opener against the New York Jets.
And now, I’m not quite sure when we’ll see CMC. The star running back has been put on injured reserve by the Niners ahead of the team’s Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings and will miss at least the next four games:
Christian McCaffrey is one of the NFL’s best players. The three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro is coming off a season in which he led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459), total scrimmage yards (2,023), and total touchdowns (21) en route to winning the Offensive Player of the Year award from the Associated Press and Pro Football Writers of America. Sure, 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan will likely have someone waiting in the wings who will put up some quality numbers in CMC’s absence. Jordan Mason did a bang-up job on Monday Night Football, but it is wayyyy too late to snag him off the waiver wire.
Even with Mason toting the rock at a serviceable clip, don’t get it twisted — CMC will be missed.
Christian McCaffrey landing on injured reserve is big NFL news…
… and there are some Chicago Bears implications.
Oh, don’t give me that look. Hear me out.
Save for his impact on my fantasy team (which finished runner-up thanks in part to CMC’s excellence down the stretch), I would not have thought twice about McCaffrey’s upcoming absence. And then I saw San Francisco’s schedule for the next four games (via ESPN’s Adam Schefter):
- Sunday on the road at Minnesota Vikings
- September 22 on the road against Los Angeles Rams
- September 29 at home against New England Patriots
- October 6 at home vs. Arizona Cardinals
Christian McCaffrey will miss at least the next four games. But who knows if his time on the sidelines will extend beyond then. Two of those first four games are against teams that the Bears could conceivably be jockeying for position with when it comes to the NFC’s Wild Card race. Maybe it is too early for some folks to look at the playoff picture. But for me, it is never too early to peek into the future. As for Chicago’s football team, it won’t see the 49ers until Week 14 on December 8.

I imagine Christian McCaffrey will be fully healed by that time. But who knows what the future holds for CMC and the Niners, so stay tuned. In the meantime, I’ll be looking to snag the backup to CMC’s backup. That guy has to still be available on the waiver wire, right?
