That was refreshing, even if thereโs still plenty of work to do for the Chicago Bears offense.
Let’s hand out some instant grades.
Offense
QB Caleb Williams | A+
The first perfect grade of the season for the rookie quarterback and it only took four games. Williams did everything he was supposed to do today and then some. One miscommunication between him and DJ on a potential touchdown, but Williams was stellar today.
RB D’Andre Swift | A+
Incredible what can happen when you use a player in a way that highlights his very specific skill set. The best afternoon of the season for DโAndre Swift, and by no coincidence, the first time heโs been used correctly by Shane Waldron.
Roschon Johnson | B
He wasnโt used as much as I would have liked to have seen, but Swiftโs uptick in efficiency impacted that. Still, Johnson rushed at a clip just shy of four yards per carry and was effective when called upon.
WR DJ Moore | A
Moore made one mistake, the slow-down on the route into the end zone on a potential touchdown at the end of the first half, but he was very good. He was very good blocking, and he and Williams hooked up for their first touchdown of the season.
WR Rome Odunze | C+
Rome wasnโt targeted a bunch today, but he caught one of his three targets. This is one where Iโm leaning eye test, but eager to see the All-22 this week.
TE Cole Kmet | C+
Kmet was great in flashes today, but he had a couple of ugly false starts.
Offensive Line | D+
This group is still a mess. But they found some rhythm in the second half and were able to open some things up for the ground attack.
Defense
Defensive Line | B+
Pressure on Matthew Stafford all afternoon and a takeaway for this group, who has repeatedly defied expectations.
Linebackers | C+
This was perhaps their worst open-field tackling day, but still not a bad performance.
Secondary | B+
Lots of bend but donโt break today, but they did enough to win against a future Hall of Fame quarterback. They even got the game-sealing interception. Still, their least inspiring performance of the season.
Special Teams
K Cairo Santos | A+
Santos did everything he was asked to do today. Solid day for old reliable (under 50 yards).
P Tory Taylor | A+
That might have been the best punter performance Iโve ever seen in a Bears game, and thatโs not hyperbole. This kid is a STUD!
Coaching
Matt Eberflus | C
Hey, he didnโt blow his timeouts at mind-boggling times today. Progress, I guess.
Shane Waldron | D
Waldron started the game the same way he had the first three weeks, but he stayed committed to the run and his personnel decisions and scheme improved as the game went on. His second half performance could be a nice building block for him, even if the overall performance left plenty to be desired.
