The Chicago Bears offensive line lost a key piece during Sunday’s win against the Los Angeles Rams when Teven Jenkins went down with an injury, left, and never came back.
During Monday’s press conference at Halas Hall, Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus shared an update regarding Jenkins’ injury by saying the team’s starting left guard is “day-to-day” with bruised ribs. Eberflus didn’t offer up much more beyond that basic statement. However, Coach Flus did say he’ll have a clearer picture of what it all means later in the week.
I thought the Bears offensive line played fine in Teven Jenkins’ absence. Maybe “fine” isn’t “good” … or even “good enough” in the grand scheme of things. And that is fair if you think that way. I don’t blame you. For me, “fine” was “enough” for one game.
To get through a game with minimal damage (3 sacks, but just 3 QB hits for LA’s defense) on the QB while also helping spearhead D’Andre Swift’s best game since joining Chicago’s football team in free agency isn’t something to sneeze at on a Monday afternoon. Don’t get me wrong. I want Teven back in the lineup as soon as he can be healthy. But if the Bears find something that works with this offensive line while Jenkins is gone, then so be it. Yesterday’s showing by the O-line wasn’t a disaster despite losing one of its best players to an injury. That is a net win in my book.
To be clear, I still think Teven Jenkins is an important piece of the Bears’ offensive line puzzle. Jenkins has the ideal size, skill, football IQ, and attitude to be a successful offensive lineman. And I say all of that while knowing that the injury bug is among the reasons that he hasn’t fully reached his potential since arriving in Chicago as a second-round pick in 2021. But with that being said, the injury stuff helps explain why Jenkins’ status beyond the 2024 season is very much up in the air.
