It was supposed to be a battle of the top two quarterbacks taken in the 2024 NFL Draft: Caleb Williams vs. Jayden Daniels. It was a fight for the pole position in the Rookie of the Year race. The league even went as far as flexing the contest into the afternoon national spotlight.
Instead, it looks like it will be Marcus Mariota for the Washington Commanders on Sunday, not Jayden Daniels.
It’s Looking Doubtful That Jayden Daniels Plays Sunday Against the Bears
Daniels has been dealing with a rib injury sustained on the opening drive of the Commandersโ victory over the Carolina Panthers last week. His status for Sundayโs matchup with the Bears was largely up in the air, but Washington head coach Dan Quinn had insisted that heโs not ruling the rookie quarterback out for Sunday.
Even after being absent from practice on Wednesday and Thursday, there was hope that Daniels could give it a go on Friday. Unfortunately, that did not happen, and it looks like the Williams-Daniels matchup that everyone wanted to see will have to wait.
On Thursday, Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury said that the team would have to be sure it could protect Daniels from the Bears pass rush and himself on Sunday if he were to play.
โI think thatโs what we have to figure out when it comes down to making the decision of whether heโs going to play or not,โ Kingsbury said. โYou want him to be able to play this game, but you want to almost protect him from himself โฆ heโs a fearless competitor, heโs going to attack the moment, so I think collectively as an organization weโve got to make sure heโs full throttle and can play the way he wants to play before we put him out there.โ
Apparently, Washington wasn’t comfortable they could do that.
Head coach Matt Eberflus said on Wednesday that the Bears were preparing for Daniels but would have a contingency game plan in place for Marcus Mariota if Washington decided to err on the side of caution. Now Eberflus can focus on Mariota.
UPDATE: Jayden Daniels Did Practice on Friday (Secretly)
The Washington Commanders pulled a fast one on us all today. They even duped Ian Rapoport. According to local reporters, the reason Jayden Daniels wasn’t on the practice field today was because he was practicing in the Commanders’ indoor bubble, which was not open to the media.
After practice, head coach Dan Quinn admitted that Daniels practiced inside the bubble and said that the team “pushed” Daniels today and that they would evaluate his status over the next two days. So, it looks like this will be a true game-time decision.
