Lions 23, Bears 20: Stuffed on Thanksgiving

The Chicago Bears continue to find new ways to lose football games.

And for the third consecutive week, the Bears will reside in Heartbreak City after another gut-wrenching end-of-game performance against an NFC North opponent. In Week 11, it was a blocked field goal against the Green Bay Packers that delivered defeat from the jaws of victory. One week later, it was an overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings after a valiant comeback. This time, it was the most bizarre clock management I have seen during the Matt Eberflus era.

FINAL: Detroit Lions 23, Chicago Bears 20 (ESPN Box Score)

Thoughts on another mind-numbing Bears loss

  • In case you missed it, this is how it ended:
  • That was 42 seconds of pure chaos. I have long been someone who has banged the table for an NFL coach to hire an assistant whose sole job is to focus on clock and timeout management. Someone like that could’ve been helpful for Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus, whose clock management over the years has left so much to be desired. This was an unconscionable way to lose a football game. The Bears should be playing in overtime as I type this. Instead, I am unpacking another unfathomable defeat.
  • INSTANT BEARS PLAYER GRADES: Week 13 vs. Lions

  • I am not sure how Matt Eberflus can be the Chicago Bears head coach when the team kicks off in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers. You could have made a case that beating the Lions would have provided the football version of a stay of execution. Instead, the Bears lost in a ridiculously stupid way that a head coach who is worth their salt could have avoided. If it was up to me, I’d make Coach Flus walk home after that one. But I’ll admit that decision might be rooted in thinking clouded by pure rage.
  • When the Lions led this one at halftime by a 16-0 score, I was mentally mapping out my afternoon and evening cooking plans. I took the turkey out of the fridge to get to room temperature, put the macaroni noodles on the counter, and began thinking about what would go on my cooking playlist. The only reason I am not throwing down in the kitchen is because rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has the kind of resolve that you expect from a seasoned veteran. QB1 deserves better.
  • Bears Week 13 highlights

Caleb Williams makes it worth turning on the TV every week

  • Caleb Williams threw three touchdown passes, but these might be my favorite of the non-tuddys:

    https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1862218343270302136

  • The improvisation, the ability to keep your head up and eyes down the field, and the arm talent to make that play are the things you dream of when creating a quarterback in video games. And the Bears have that guy. It’s a shame that football Terry Bevington is his head coach.
  • Chicago’s defense spent much of the first half getting gashed by Detroit’s offense. But in this instance, Gervon Dexter Sr. made magic happen:
  • How did the three Bears perform?

Caleb Williams — This is what the final line looked like for QB1 in his first-ever Bears-Lions Thanksgiving affair:

  • 20/39 (51.2%)
  • 256 yards
  • 3 TD, 0 INT
  • 97.8 passer rating
  • 4 carries, 39 yards
  • 5 sacks (33 yards lost)
  • 10 quarterback hits
  • For as ugly as the first half looked, Caleb’s second half looked equally wonderful. Williams was dropping dots and making chicken salad out of chicken spit after intermission. Maybe he was inspired by Shaboozey’s halftime performance.

Terell Smith — I’ll be interested in seeing the snap breakdown this week. Smith finished with 4 solo tackles and a pass breakup on what could have been an interception.

Teven Jenkins — The Bears’ starting left guard had a crucial and costly penalty that wiped out a 12-yard completion to Keenan Allen that would’ve given the Bears a 1st-and-10 from the 13-yard-line. One play later, Caleb Williams was sacked on a QB draw. And then the game-ending chaos happened.

WHAT’S NEXT: Sunday, Dec. 8 at San Francisco 49ers, 3:25 p.m. CT on FOX

Go enjoy Thanksgiving with your family and friends. You don’t deserve to deal with any more heartache than you already have today. Thanks for reading. We’ll be around if you need us.
