Whoa! A little more than an hour after telling reporters he was confident he would be coaching the team’s Week 14 game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears have reportedly fired head coach Matt Eberflus.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has the scoop:
There it is folks: Matt Eberflus is out. And Thomas Brown is in as the interim head coach. I can’t believe that all of this is happening before noon. This is a true Black Friday first.
What is next for the Chicago Bears after firing Matt Eberflus?
If ever there was a time for the Bears to fire their head coach during the middle of the season, it was now. The 2024 Bears entered the season with so much promise and hope. And, indeed, after a 4-2 start, it appeared as if they might just live up to those lofty expectations. But the team has since embarked on a six-game losing streak under Matt Eberflus’ guidance. And because so many of the losses circled back to the head coach’s mismanagement of personnel and situations, it is understandable why the Bears did what they did.
There will be so much to unpack from this report. I am looking forward to seeing if President Kevin Warren and/or General Manager Ryan Poles will meet the media at Halas Hall or release a statement.
Matt Eberflus finishes his Bears career with a 14-32 record and .304 winning percentage. The Bears did not have a winning record against divisional or conference opponents during his time running the team. Even with Chicago’s football team spending a chunk of Eberflus’ tenure in a rebuilding phase, that the team kept finding ways to lose games when it was time to win was a red flag. And that the Bears were losing the style of games that their head coach wanted felt like a sign that this thing wasn’t going to work out.
More to come…
