Somehow … Matt Eberflus returned.
One day after the Chicago Bears found a brand new way to lose a football game that was so unfathomable that it led to all sorts of criticism directed at the guy in charge, there was no change to be made at the head coach position.
This is what Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus had to say about his job security and status during Friday’s Zoom press conference via @BearsMarquee on Twitter/X:
"I'm confident that I'll be working onto San Francisco and getting ready for that game."

If you can’t watch or listen to the video above, here is a transcription of the 21-second snippet:
“I’m just going to be working on finishing up this game and doing a good job of evaluating that. Our after-action report like we always do. And then I will work it into San Francisco. Again, those are conversations we’ll have. And, again, I’m confident that I’ll be working onto San Francisco and getting ready for that game.”
Now that we have heard from the Bears head coach, we’re off to figure out what is next on the agenda.
What’s next for Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus?
For what it’s worth: Matt Eberflus told reporters at Halas Hall that he spoke to team President Kevin Warren and General Manager Ryan Poles after Thursday’s loss to the Detroit Lions. Bear Report’s Zack Pearson notes (via Twitter/X) that it is standard operating procedure for Eberflus, Poles, and Warren to meet after games. And if you’ve watched those post-game victory locker room huddles the Bears share on their social media channels, then you’ve probably seen Poles and Warren in the background so you know that checks out. Then again, it has been 47 days since Chicago’s football team has won a game. Hence, I understand if it doesn’t immediately click.
WEEK 13: Bears-Lions Recap | Player Grades
Pearson also points out that Eberflus is set to meet with Poles and Warren later today. To that end, I am not sure if that is part of the normal routine or if that is different. But I suppose it is worth sharing in an attempt to paint a fuller picture of this situation.
By now, you know the Bears have never fired a head coach during the season. But with the team riding a six-game losing streak highlighted by three consecutive gut-punch losses to NFC North rivals, this felt like an opportune time to send a message that things are different at Halas Hall. And after a 4-2 start, losing six straight games, and embarrassing yourself in front of a nationally televised audience, breaking away from the norm would have been understandable. The Bears haven’t done that just yet and I am afraid that they might not do so until after the season ends.

There isn’t much of a precedent when it comes to Black Friday firings. However, I do recall the Detroit Lions firing Head Coach Matt Patricia and General Manager Bob Quinn on the Saturday after a Thanksgiving loss in 2020. Perhaps that is a path the Bears could follow this season. As far as I am concerned, it would be standard operating procedure for the Bears to go into the weekend with Matt Eberflus as their head coach only to start Monday with a new guy in charge — but only because standard operating procedure for the Bears is rooted in chaos. When it comes to this team, the most chaotic path is often the one most frequented.
We will continue to keep tabs on Matt Eberflus’ situation and will share any worthwhile rumors and news as it pops up. In the meantime, go enjoy the rest of your long weekend.
