The Chicago Bears and the NFL have bestowed quite the honor on Andrew Billings.
Billings is the Chicago Bears’ nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for 2024. This is one of the most notable achievements an NFL player can receive. Named in honor of Bears legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Walter Payton, this award commemorates a player’s excellence on and off the field. Billings certainly fits the bill here.
On the field, Andrew Billings was a space-eating defensive tackle who was establishing himself as one of the league’s best before going on injured reserve. He devoured ball carriers and hassled quarterbacks. His traditional stats (1 sack, 2 tackles-for-loss, 3 quarterback hits) only tell part of the story. Pro Football Focus has Billings with the ninth-best pass-rushing grade among interior defensive linemen. Last season, ESPN’s run-stop win rankings had Billings as a top-10 player among defensive tackles with a 39 percent run-stop win rate. All in all, Billings is a quality player and someone your defense wants in the trenches.
And based on how the Bears’ run defense has performed since Andrew Billings went on injured reserve, he is undoubtedly missed.
Off the field, Andrew Billings gives back to the community in his hometown of Waco, Texas via the Billings Family Find-A-Way Foundation. Billings gets into that (and more) in this Q&A with Gabby Hajduk at the Bears’ official website. There are a bunch of neat quotes and anecdotes, but this exchange was my favorite:
Q: This honor is particularly special to the Bears because of Walter Payton’s impact on the organization. Did you have any Walter Payton or Bears fandom growing up?
A: Yeah, my dad’s family is from Chicago, so the Bears are about all they watched on TV. They always talked about the Fridge (William Perry). I remember [Jay] Cutler — that’s when I started getting into football. I knew Walter Payton was a great running back, but I didn’t know how great he was until I got here. We watched the video of him running up the hill in OTAs and I didn’t know all of that about him, so it was pretty cool.
I love it when Bears players get a history lesson. As a bonus, it is fun to think about how players’ families have connections to the team and share it with their children. Football is better when it is passed down from one generation to the next.
