An old friend has found a new home as a college football head coach.
Dowell Loggains, who was an assistant for the Chicago Bears from 2015-17, has taken over as the Appalachian State University football team’s head coach.
No, seriously.
Hey, good for him. Most former Bears offensive coordinators disappear into anonymity. To see someone leave the Bears and become a head coach somewhere else years later is a true testament to perseverance. Way to go, Dowell.
Former Bears Offensive Coordinator Dowell Loggains gets a shot to be a head coach
Dowell Loggains was a Chicago Bears assistant coach from 2015-17 working under Head Coach John Fox. Loggains began his coaching stint in Chicago as the quarterbacks coach in 2015. In that particular stint, he worked with Jay Cutler. After Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase left to take the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins, Loggains moved up the chain of command and was the Bears’ offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017. After Fox was fired, Loggains followed Gase to Miami to become the Dolphins’ OC. Since then, Loggains has spent time with the New York Jets (OC and QBs Coach, 2019-20), the University of Arkansas (Tight Ends Coach, 2021-22), and the University of South Carolina (OC, QBs Coach from 2023-24).
Who saw this career arc coming?
Seeing news that Dowell Loggains was getting an opportunity to become a head coach took me by surprise. But good for him. Loggains hasn’t coached in Chicago since 2017. Since his departure, the Bears have started nine different quarterbacks, hired six different offensive coordinators, and will have their fourth head coach in 2025 (if Thomas Brown doesn’t get the interim tag stripped at the end of his run). Bygones are bygones. Water is under the bridge. And unlike most coaches who leave the Windy City, Loggains has rebranded himself and is in a position to take the leap as a head coach. I wish him the best of luck.
