The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Today, we’re looking at the 2024 season of tight end Cole Kmet.
Cole Kmet’s 2024 Snapshot
The 2024 season was frustrating for many, but few felt that frustration like tight end Cole Kmet. Kmet finished the season with 47 catches, 474 yards, and four touchdowns on just 55 targets. His catches and targets were the lowest totals for him since his rookie season in 2020, and his touchdown total was his worst since 2021 when he somehow caught zero touchdowns despite recording 60 catches for 612 yards.
Still, Kmet’s demise has been greatly exaggerated. Cole Kmet didn’t become a lesser tight end or pass-catching threat this season, although regression seems like something that would have been justified under the circumstances of the 2024 season. Instead, Kmet was a victim of a broken offense.
There were flashes of the Kmet we know and love this season when the football came his way. In Week 12 against the Minnesota Vikings, Kmet caught seven passes for 64 yards in a 30-27 overtime loss at Soldier Field. In Week 7, Kmet caught five passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, the Bears final victory before their 10-game losing streak. Then there was Week 3, when Kmet logged a season-best 10 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Kmet totaled 22 catches for 231 yards and three scores in those three games. That accounted for just shy of 50 percent of his season-long receptions and yardage production and all but one of his touchdowns on the season.
The issue wasn’t Kmet, who caught 85.5 percent of the passes thrown his way this season. In fact, Kmet’s 85.5 reception rate was a career-best, and his 10.1 yards per reception was right on track with his career numbers. The issue was the offense and the lack of opportunity it provided Kmet.
By the Numbers
- Receptions: 47
- Targets: 55
- Receiving Yards: 474
- Receiving Touchdowns: 4
- Longest Reception: 31
- First Downs: 25
Contract Status
Cole Kmet signed a four-year, $50 million extension in July 2023. Kmet is scheduled to make $11.6 million in 2025, 2026, and 2027. Kmet’s 2025 cap number ranks 12th in 2025 as of today and could fall down those rankings this offseason, with new deals and extensions likely on the way for tight ends this offseason.
One Big Question for 2025
What will Cole Kmet’s role look like in 2025?
Cole Kmet was targeted three or fewer times in 11 games this season. He was targeted two or fewer times in nine games and saw eight targets in the season’s final six games after he caught seven passes for 64 yards against the Vikings in November. That simply can’t happen in 2025. So, if Caleb Williams and Cole Kmet need to hit Wrigley Field for some more Cubs games this summer, or spend some time throwing the football around, those two need to figure out how to get on the same page.
