Eddie George is one of the most decorated football players of my childhood.
The Ohio State product won the Heisman, Walter Camp, Maxwell, and Doak Walker awards in college. He was a unanimous All-American and first-team All-Big Ten to wrap up his college career. As a pro, he was a two-time All-Pro, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and four-time Pro Bowler.
And now, he’ll add Chicago Bears Head Coach Interview Candidate to his résume.
NFL on FOX insider Jay Glazer has the scoop:
Breaking News: Eddie George is scheduled to interview for the Bears' head coaching position tomorrow, per @JayGlazer. 🏈 pic.twitter.com/7QAlp0rPpe— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) January 19, 2025
Words from Glazer:
“The Chicago Bears, who I know Ben Johnson is on their list, here’s a surprise candidate that they are interviewing tomorrow. It is this guy, Eddie George — how about that — who is the head coach at Tennessee State for the last four years. Coach of the year in his conference, won his conference. They will interview him tomorrow morning.”
Holy cow! That one came out of nowhere!
UPDATE (Jan 19) — It’s apparently an in-person interview:
Eddie George is a surprise new candidate for the Chicago Bears head coach job
At first blush, I was surprised as you were to hear that Eddie George was the newest member of the Chicago Bears coaching search wish list. But then I remembered that George already has some coaching experience with the Bears. If you’ll recall, he (and Randy Shannon) joined the Bears coaching staff for OTAs in 2023 as part of the NFL’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.
If you don’t remember, here’s a refresher:
George and Shannon are set to join Head Coach Matt Eberflus’ staff for the 2023 OTAs portion of the offseason. George is the head coach at Tennessee State, while Shannon is the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Florida State. Unlike George, who has just two years of head coaching experience at TSU, Shannon has a whole bunch of coaching experience under his belt. Shannon has been coaching for 31 years with stops at Central Florida, Florida, Arkansas, and Texas Christian. It’ll be interesting to see two coaches with very different perspectives and experiences get their hands on NFL players. I’m rooting for some good stories to come from this. But also, some quality learning experiences for both coaches.
Well, well, well. The Bill Walsh Diversity program churns out another coaching candidate. I’m not sure how far this will go. But the timing sure is interesting. Stay tuned.
