Day 19 of the Chicago Bears offseason. Somehow … my headache returned. I’ll gut it out today because I have dinner plans that I can’t cancel.
- A quick reminder at the top that you can follow all your favorite BN friends on BlueSky. We’re here, but you can also find BN Bulls, BN Blackhawks, and the OG BN Cubs where the skies are blue.
- Seeing how the bizarre Liam Coen situation played out makes me think that it suddenly makes sense that the Bears didn’t interview him for their head coaching position. Beyond the obvious of wanting Ben Johnson, it is tough for me not to see what happened in Jacksonville and Tampa Bay without thinking about the likelihood of Coen giving off questionable vibes during last year’s interview OC process. Thankfully, Chicago’s football team got its guy and we can move on in peace.
- Speaking of getting their guy, Tom Brady got his guy today with the Las Vegas Raiders set to hire Pete Carroll. Let’s call a spade a spade. Carroll made more sense for the Raiders than Johnson did. Upon his arrival, Pete can clean up the culture, raise the bar, set some standards, and get this franchise into shape over the next 3-4 years. And once the foundation is set, then Vegas can position itself to find the next version of Ben. Or maybe a 67-year-old Mike McCarthy will want the gig. Who’s to say?
- Meanwhile, the Bears continue to line up defensive coordinator candidates. On Wednesday, it was Los Angeles Rams assistant Aubrey Pleasant. One day later, it was Daronte Jones of the Minnesota Vikings. While I still believe that Dennis Allen will end up as Chicago’s next DC, it would not surprise me if one of the interview candidates finds their way on the staff. It is worth noting that both Pleasant *AND* Jones have worked as defensive backs coaches in the past. Keep an eye on this situation.
- More Chicago coaching news from Patrick Finley (via Twitter/X) of the Sun-Times: Defensive Backs Coach Jon Hoke and Running Backs Coach Chad Morton are not expected to be back in the fold on Ben Johnson’s staff. Hoke is a revered coach of secondary talent, so I figure he’ll get a shot somewhere. As for Morton, he was a popular figure among a certain segment of the fan base from how he coached up running backs during Hard Knocks. Maybe another team will find a spot for him in the future.
- Finding a quality RBs Coach is a sneakily important hire for the Bears. D’Andre Swift wasn’t the best version of himself last year. Khalil Herbert never returned to his 2022 form. Roschon Johnson’s development seems to have stalled. I hope that putting new eyes on old problems could help level up the position group. But more than that, it feels like that room needs a new voice.
- Hey! When are the Bears going to interview some *OFFENSIVE* coordinator candidates?
- The Tribune has a rundown of the history of Chicago Bears head coaches. If you’re a Bears history buff (like me!) then this is a link for you.
- Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) believes new Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson can help General Manager Ryan Poles on the personnel side of things if they work together as a tandem. I’ve mentioned this previously, so I am not going to be shy about beating this drum: Poles prioritized addressing the position groups that Matt Eberflus wanted to fill most when he was hired as head coach in 2022. With Johnson on board, I fully expect Poles to do build a team in the vision of his new coach starting in 2025.
- Senior National NFL Columnist Judy Battista asks a question I’ve been pondering: Do first impressions matter for newly hired NFL head coaches? I can go either way on this one. If you think so, I can see it. And if you don’t, I can understand why. For me, I love a strong first impression because it sets a baseline of expectations. And it gives me an opportunity to go back and see if you lived up to your end of the bargain.
