Super Bowl Week is HERE! And while the Chicago Bears aren’t playing for the Lombardi Trophy, it’s not as if this game will be without some Chicago connections. Among them is Vic Fangio, who is the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator. Bears fans are likely familiar with Fangio from his time in Chicago, in which he was the team’s defensive coordinator from 2015-18.
As part of a Q&A session with the Eagles’ social media team, there are a few instances in which Vic Fangio reflects fondly about his time in Chicago. It is a small part of a 3-minute and 50-second session of Philly’s DC answering questions from Eagles fans. But it might be the best nearly four-minute distraction you’ll have today. So check it out:

Vic Fangio remembers Chicago fondly (because, duh!)
Of course, Vic Fangio ranks Chicago as one of the best food cities he has ever coached in — were you expecting it not to make the cut? This city has some of the best food in the world. It is always nice to see someone on a big stage show some love in that regard.
The other Chicago-centric mention comes in a question in which Fangio is asked to put together a Mount Rushmore of defensive players. Even when limiting to players he coached, Fangio had a tough time condensing his list. The long-time NFL coach rattled through the names of players he coached at every stop on his journey. Playmakers on the Saints, Niners, and elsewhere. And when it came to the Bears, Vic immediately went to two names — pass rusher Khalil Mack and linebacker Roquan Smith. Ahhh … that really takes me back.
Yours truly has been the lead writer at BN’s Bears wing since 2017. If you’re not mathematically inclined, we’re going on eight years strong here. And in those years, there is no coach I’ve had more fun writing about than Vic Fangio. His honest style was endearing and helped make for some fun content to write during the time he was running Chicago’s defense. Oh yeah, those defenses were also fun to watch.
When it comes to Super Bowl LIX, I do not have a horse in the race. It matters very little to me if the Kansas City Chiefs pull off the three-peat. And if the Philadelphia Eagles pull off the upset, I won’t be emotionally moved because it’s not as if that team has had a long or arduous road to the top. But with that being said, thinking back to the Vic Fangio days makes me think about rooting for Philly on Sunday — but only because it could lead to some more fun stories from the former Bears defensive play-caller.
