DeBrincat and Boqvist Placed In COVID Protocol, Happy Birthday to the Great One, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks got out of town just in time yesterday. While most of us in Illinois woke up to a brand new blanket of snow, the Blackhawks wake up in Nashville ready to take on the Predators. Unfortunately, it will be tense morning. After Adam Boqvist and Alex DeBrincat were placed on the NHL’s COVID-19 Protocol list, the Blackhawks will have to see how the day unfolds and hope that no other players will be affected and that the games tonight and Wednesday will go without a hitch.

•   There is no clear explanation at this time why Boqvist and DeBrincat were placed on the COVID protocol list. The reasons could be just contact tracing or could be positive test results, but the two did not travel with the team on Monday to Nashville.

•   The absences open up two spots in the lineup for the Blackhawks. Offensively, look for one of Matthew Highmore or Lucas Wallmark to return to the lineup after being scratched in the past few days. The Blackhawks also have MacKenzie Entwistle, Brandon Pirri, and Reese Johnson available on the Taxi Squad. Defensively, Boqvist’s position could be filled by Lucas Carlsson, Nicolas Beaudin, or Wyatt Kalynuk. My guess is that Wallmark and Carlsson will be slotted into the lineup for Tuesday night’s game.

•   Chicago and Nashville enter the night as two teams that most counted out of the Central Division playoff picture this season. The Blackhawks currently have five points in the standings and back-to-back wins, with the Predators having four points in the standings and having lost their last three games in-a-row. The back-to-backs games in Nashville could provide a jumping off point for the Blackhawks after building confidence and momentum against the Red Wings over the weekend.

•   Mark Lazerus of The Athletic put together a list of the 16 different centermen that Patrick Kane has played with over his career with the Blackhawks and it’s a fascinating read. Check out the full list linked above, but it is kind of incredible that outside of Jonathan Toews, Kane has been able to put together the Hall of Fame career he has with what little top-tier talent he has been paired with.

•   Steve Kornacki of Election 2020 fame, apparently a big Jonathan Toews fan. Can’t blame him!

•   A Happy Birthday to The Great One! G.O.A.T. Wayne Gretzky turns 60-years-old today.

•   Want to take a second to recognize the amazing work being done by the NWHL and those that have been covering the league and the bubble season so far. It’s amazing the amount of dedication and effort being put in by these people to help grow the visibility of the league and awesome to see it going so well. There’s been some ugliness away from the ice, but the league is growing through their hard work and that should not go unrecognized!

•   Also want to take a second to remember Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and those lost in the tragic crash that happened one year ago today. Kobe was an icon, inside and outside of basketball. He was one of the greatest and his global impact on basketball will never be forgotten.

•   That’s all for this Tuesday. Take time for your loved ones today.
