We’ve waited long enough for Chicago Blackhawks hockey to be back and tonight, it kind of is. The Blackhawks take on the rival Detroit Red Wings in the first game of the 2021-22 preseason for Chicago. This is the first of two meetings with the Red Wings in the preseason, and one of only four times in the preseason and regular season combined that the teams will meet after playing in the same division last season. While it will be the first action in a few months for most of the Blackhawks in the lineup tonight, it is the first game in over a full calendar year for Chicago’s returning Captain, Jonathan Toews.

What To Watch For
• The return of Jonathan Toews to the Blackhawks has been one of, if not the biggest storyline for the club on the ice this offseason. He’s in the lineup tonight for the first time in any game for Chicago since the end of the 2020 postseason. We’ll see how much time he gets tonight, but it’s just a good feeling to see Toews back in the lineup.
• Blackhawks rookie Lukas Reichel makes his “debut” with Chicago tonight. After playing the past two seasons in the German DEL, Reichel comes to North America for his first professional season in the organization. He’s paired with Kirby Dach and Brandon Hagel, and will play on a powerplay unit as well tonight.
• Three potential defensemen on the cusp of making the NHL roster are in the lineup tonight with Wyatt Kalynuk, Caleb Jones, and Nicolas Beaudin. Look for any one of them to have a good first showing tonight as they are in a training camp battle for two of the last spots in the Blackhawks’ defensive group to begin the season.
Get Caught Up …
JC the other day: "We're trying to help him move along and gain conditioning, strength and timing and all of those things. So in order to do that, we're going to include him for sure. But, again, as we said earlier. No expectations. We'll see. But I feel like he keeps improving."

Colliton on Toews playing tonight:
"We want to get everyone in, and he's one of them. It'll be a step up in the load, being in a real game…so we'll see."

Kubalik on reuniting with Toews:
"Right away the first practice, the chemistry clicked back. It's nice when you play the puck somewhere you don't even know if there's going to be somebody, and he's there. You know where he's going to be and he probably knows where I am."
