Pre-Gamin’: Blackhawks vs Blues (7:30 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Chicago Blackhawks

If you ask me, the best way to spend a Friday night and the first night of October, is with Blackhawks preseason hockey. The most exciting hockey of them all, right?

After falling in the shootout to the Red Wings on Wednesday night, the Blackhawks are back in action tonight to face the rival St. Louis Blues. This is the first game of any kind for the Blackhawks against the Blues since March 8, 2020, after the teams were split into different divisions last season. This is the first of two games on back-to-back nights between the Blackhawks and Blues this preseason.

What To Watch For

•   I sound like a broken record, but Jonathan Toews is again in the lineup tonight and again is a player to watch. He’s been a full participant in every practice session of training camp so far and logged 22:48 minutes on Wednesday night in the preseason game against the Red Wings, his first NHL action in over 13 months. As long as he is able to continue to go 100% in these preseason games, it’s a positive for the returning Captain.

•   The top-line of Alex DeBrincat, Tyler Johnson, and Patrick Kane has been the only consistent trio of forwards in every practice so far in training camp. A lot of speed and skill on that line, but we’ll see how Johnson handles playing in a “top” role down the middle after being a complimentary forward with the Lightning for the past few seasons.

•   Tonight will be the preseason debuts of Tyler Johnson, Seth Jones, Jake McCabe, and Marc-André Fleury. While it’s the first “real” game action for the four of them in the preseason, it’ll serve as a small barometer of where they are as the season approaches less than two weeks away. All four of these players are going to play key roles to the Blackhawks’ success in the regular season this year.
