After a blockbuster trade helps your franchise, go ahead and enjoy the spoils. Right?
The media team of the Ottawa Senators were all over it on Thursday afternoon, as their front office consummated a huge trade with the Blackhawks, acquiring Alex DeBrincat for three picks, including tonight’s first rounder (No. 7 overall). And the moment the phone call came from Chicago general manager Kyle Davidson accepting the trade, the cameras were rolling.
It is not a particularly pretty sight for Hawks fans. So guard yourself against some smiles that’ll make you feel sick.
When he hangs up the phone and says “Sorry about 7…” and the response is “For a 40-goal scorer? We’ll take it.” the salt hit the wound. And it stung.
It almost felt like the phone was answered anticipating a counter offer and… the deal was done.
With all of that being said, this is a fun look inside the inner working of an NHL front office on draft day with one of the more significant trades in the league this year happening. They check the boxes and make sure the right people are on the email to the league and the trade call to formally make the trade a reality.
Sadly, it was our Blackhawks on the wrong end of the high fives in this one.
