Just before the Blackhawks’ Development Camp opened on Monday morning, the Chicago Blackhawks announced two significant additions to Luke Richardson’s first coaching staff in the NHL.
Former interim head coach Derek King and Kevin Dean have been hired as assistant coaches. Chicago also confirmed goaltending coach Jimmy Waite and video coach Matt Meacham will return to the Blackhawks coaching staff.
“It’s great to have this experienced staff with me behind the bench,” Richardson said in the team’s statement. “Derek has made an impact here on this organization, and I’m thrilled to have someone like him on our staff. Kevin’s mind for the game and defensive focus will be an asset for us. It’s great to have the cornerstone of this coaching group finalized, and we will continue to add a few pieces.”
King inherited a broken team last November, dealing with a horrendous start, a head coach firing, and the fallout of the Jenner & Block findings, and guided them to a 27-33-10 record the rest of the way.
Kyle Davidson complimented King’s efforts at Luke Richardson’s introductory press conference recently: “There was a lot going on with the team, and the success on the ice just wasn’t there. So it was a tough spot for Derek to step into and into his first foray as a head coach in the NHL. We thought he did excellent. He really helped calm things down and solidify things in the locker room.”
