While we learned Frank Nazar was among the final cuts from the United States’ roster for the upcoming World Junior Championship on Sunday, another Blackhawks prospect was a surprise addition.
Defenseman Ethan Del Mastro received a last-minute invite from Canada to join their roster because of an injury.
Del Mastro, who was a fourth-round pick (No. 105 overall) by the Blackhawks in the 2021 NHL Draft, was in Canada’s evaluation camp with a handful of other Chicago prospects. None of the Blackhawks’ players made the initial, final roster for Canada but the injury to Daemon Hunt opened the door for Del Mastro to join the team.
When we watched Del Mastro during the Blackhawks’ development camp in early July we saw why he was among the first contracts written by general manager Kyle Davidson when he took over the job. Listed at 6-4 and 206 pounds, Del Mastro is a big body who skates well and passes the puck with ease.
