The Chicago Blackhawks announced the organization has signed college free agent forward Cole Guttman to a two-year, entry-level contract on Thursday morning. The deal has a $950,000 cap hit at the NHL level.
Guttman, 23, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh round (No. 180 overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft. He’s a right-handed shot listed at 5-11 and 174 pounds who played the past four years at the University of Denver. He scored 19 goals in 41 games last season as the captain at Denver where they won the national championship.
“Cole’s game has progressed during his time with the University of Denver and we’re looking forward to continuing that development within our organization,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in the release. “Captaining his team to a championship last season demonstrates his leadership and commitment on the ice, and those are qualities we’re always looking for in our players.”
For two seasons, Guttman was a teammate of Blackhawks defenseman Ian Mitchell at DU (2018-19 and 2019-20).
