What Blackhawks Fans Should Be Watching in September

As the calendar flips to September, the eyes of many will be on the gridiron as the NFL season kicks off and college football is in full swing. Baseball pennant races will heat up as well. But that doesn’t mean hockey is still dormant. Training camps will open soon, and the Blackhawks will have some players in action that we can watch this month.

Here are some dates to circle on your calendar as we turn to the ninth month of the year. As you write these down, please enjoy a little Earth, Wind and Fire.

NHL

  • The Blackhawks will play two preseason games this month. They host the St. Louis Blues on Sept. 27 and visit the Detroit Red Wings on Sept. 28. Which means training camp is coming soon!
  • Prospects

  • The Blackhawks will host this year’s Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase at Fifth Third Arena against the Minnesota Wild’s prospects. The two games will be played on Friday, Sept. 16 (at 7 PM) and Sunday, Sept. 18 (at 1 PM). The games, and practices, are free and open to the public.
  • Kevin Korchinski, the Blackhawks’ top pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, is returning to the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL. Their preseason begins on Sept. 9 with four warm-up games before their regular season kicks off against Vancouver on Sept. 23. Korchinski signed his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks on Aug. 10.

  • Jalen Luypen, the 216th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL Draft, has already signed his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks. After a breakout season with the Edmonton Oil Kings last year, he was traded to the Tri-City Americans this summer. Tri-City’s training camp opens this week. They play five preseason games between Sept. 10-18.
  • Paul Ludwinski, the 39th overall pick in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft, will skate for the Kingston Frontenacs again this season. Their training camp has already opened. Ludwinski’s first preseason game is this weekend (Sept. 4) with four preseason games on their schedule.

  • Samuel Savoie, the 81st overall pick in the third round of the 2022 NHL Draft, has already seen action for the Gatineau Olympiques in the QMJHL. Their final three preseason games are on Sept. 9, 10 and 16.
  • Nils Juntorp, the 188th overall pick in the sixth round this summer, is joining the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL this season. They, too, will play in the USHL Fall Classic series. Dubuque’s regular season begins on Sept. 30 against Madison.
