Chelios Honored, Domi Talks Food and Chemistry, Richardson’s Openness, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Chicago Blackhawks

It’s (preseason) game day! Are you excited, Blackhawks fans? One thing to watch tonight will be Colton Dach drawing into the NHL lineup for the first time. He’s back out of concussion protocol and head coach Luke Richardson told us yesterday that he’ll skate in Minnesota tonight.

  • One of the early trades made by Kyle Davidson was acquiring Sam Lafferty from the Penguins. I spoke with him yesterday about having a more certain spot in the NHL and how his summer with USA Hockey changed his perspective on the ice.
  • Chris Chelios was inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday. I know his departure from the Blackhawks still rubs a lot of fans the wrong way, but he was a tremendous captain and leader in Chicago. He has always been a Blackhawks fan first and foremost, and is back in the organization.
  • Max Domi chatted with a few of us yesterday. We asked about a lot of different subjects, including his appreciation for Gibson’s Italia (raved about the food and the scene) — he said he hasn’t had a foul ball on food since arriving in Chicago.
  • Here’s what Domi had to say about skating with Patrick Kane:
  • As we noted in our Afternoon Blackhawks Bites yesterday, the game in St. Louis was changed to a 2 PM CT start to accommodate playoff baseball in St. Louis. Sadly, we don’t have that problem in Chicago right now (thanks, White Sox).
  • Ben Pope is absolutely right: Luke Richardson’s willingness to talk Xs and Os with us has been refreshingly uncommon from an NHL head coach. And as he works to implement his changes to the structure on the ice for the Blackhawks, he’s been happy to talk about where the issues have been thus far in the preseason. This is a good read on what and how he’s changing the Blackhawks’ approach.
  • You know what else is refreshing from a head coach? The focus being on the players and not him. And, when Richardson was asked about his emotions going into his first regular season game as a permanent head coach, he immediately deflected it to the roster skating in front of him.
  • If you’re looking for someone on the Blackhawks to cheer for this year, Richardson might be at the top of my list. He’s been a breath of fresh air in the room and with the media and absolutely gets it.
  • Here’s the list of players who went on waivers yesterday (all four Blackhawks’ skaters cleared and went to Rockford):
  • Remember when Ryan Dzingel was a guy Blackhawks fans were interested in? Could they take a flyer on him now off the waiver wire?
  • Finally, Eddie Jackson has been solid for the Bears this season with a really young secondary around him. Luis looked at how he’s back to being the aggressive player we loved early in his career.
