Nathan MacKinnon Avs Stanley Cup

Know The Enemy: Colorado Avalanche

Chicago Blackhawks

In the finale of our Central Division preview series, we take a peak at the defending Stanley Cup champions. The Avs made a big change in net and suffered a significant loss up front, but they’re still expected to be one of — if not the — best teams in the Western Conference. And they’ll raise the banner with the Blackhawks in their house tomorrow night.

How will they do?

IneffectiveMath Projection: 95.8 (2nd in Central)
JFresh Projection: 105 (1st in Central)
The Athletic Projection: 106.6 (1st in Central)
DraftKings Over/Under: 111.5 (6th in Central)

What’d I miss?

The biggest question after the Avs won the Cup was whether or not they could find a way to keep second-line center Nazem Kadri. Well, they didn’t. And he signed in Calgary.

The Avs also lost their starting goaltender. Darcy Kuemper moved on to Washington and the Avs opted to acquire Alexander Georgiev and sign him to a three-year, $10.2 million deal ($3.4M AAV).

Oh, and Nathan MacKinnon got the bag. Good for him. He’s worth every penny.

When do they play the Blackhawks?

  • Oct. 12 — @ Colorado
  • Jan. 12 — vs Colorado
  • March 20 — @ Colorado
