Before the Blackhawks’ home opener started, we asked on Twitter who would score the first home goal this season. The options: Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews or the field.
The answer: Andreas Athanasiou.
And he did it on a penalty shot at 5:41 into the second period.
Between 1991 and 2009, the Blackhawks converted only one of 23 penalty shot opportunities. This was the first time a Blackhawks skater has converted one since Jonathan Toews did it on March 11, 2019 (my younger brother’s birthday).
Oh, and in almost 100 years, how often has a Blackhawks skater done it against Detroit?
