Sam Lafferty Out Friday, Will Miss ‘A Few Days’ for the Blackhawks

Chicago Blackhawks

Before Friday’s early afternoon game against Montreal, Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson was asked to update the status of forward Sam Lafferty. Lafferty didn’t come out for the third period of the Blackhawks’ implosion loss in Dallas and was questionable for today’s game.

Evidently Lafferty will not only miss Friday’s game, but could miss Sunday’s game against Winnipeg as well. Richardson indicated Lafferty is dealing with an upper-body injury and needs some time to get right. Chicago’s coach did say there was a chance Lafferty could have returned for the third period in Dallas but the team wanted to be prudent with how they used him.

Over the last few games Lafferty had been centering the Blackhawks’ fourth line. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Boris Katchouk, who will play the left wing and MacKenzie Entwistle will slide to center on the bottom line against Montreal. It’s worth noting the Blackhawks also have Jujhar Khaira available to take faceoffs in the lineup as well.

Lafferty, 27, is averaging 14 minutes of ice time per game and has seven points to start the season. He’s been a key penalty killer and his speed has helped drive offense for the Blackhawks’ bottom six at times this season. His 10 takeaways are tied for third on the team with Jonathan Toews, Jason Dickinson and Caleb Jones.
