Luke Richardson Has a Hero Friend in Town for Tonight’s Game

Chicago Blackhawks

Watching the last month of Blackhawks hockey has been a grind, so it can be a refreshing departure from the on-ice grind to see the human side of things.

Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson and Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy have been friends a long time. They grew up and played hockey together as kids. Their friendship was probably going to come up at some point before and during tonight’s game, but it took a different turn after Thursday morning’s pre-game skate.

After this morning’s skate, Richardson was wearing a black Ottawa Fire Department t-shirt. The shirt caught my eye immediately; for those who don’t know, I was a fireman before deciding that this was the long-term path for me. Thankfully the Chicago Tribune‘s Phil Thompson asked Richardson about the more casual, non-Blackhawks look today.

A high school friend of Richardson and Cassidy’s named Barry, who is a fireman in Ottawa, is in town for tonight’s game to catch up with his two old friends and teammates. While Barry works in a life-saving profession, he’s going to be making one of the most important saves of his life in the near future.

“He’s in town just on his last little vacation because he’s doing a surgery,” Richardson said on Thursday morning. “He’s donating a kidney to a high school friend. I told the players about it yesterday, it’s one of the most selfless things someone could do to save someone’s life and puts it in perspective that we’re here doing a job at the highest level and enjoying it, let’s do it well today because there are other things that are more important in life.”

That’s pretty darn cool.

Richardson said that the friend to whom Barry is donating the kidney was on the verge of full-time dialysis before Barry decided to get checked out to see if he was a potential match. He was.

“The guy’s on part-time dialysis but he’ll soon go onto full-time dialysis. He was running out of time; Barry went in and got checked and was a match. Worked out great.”

I would say that I hope that Richardson and the Hawks could get Barry a win tonight, but considering Vegas’ head coach Bruce Cassidy is a friend as well, it’s a win-win situation for Barry tonight.
