One of the most dramatic hockey games you could have watched all year happened in the World Juniors. And then they cranked it up to another level in the gold medal game.
The United States led Sweden 1-0 after one period. The two teams then scored nine combined goals in the second period and then four more in the third to take a 7-7 game to overtime. Chaz Lucious scored his third goal of the game in overtime to win the bronze for the United States.
Then came the gold medal game between Canada and Czechia — the team that handed Canada their only loss of the tournament to date. Canada took a 2-0 lead into the third period off Dylan Guenther in the first and Shane Wright (on his birthday) in the second. But Czechia scored twice in 54 seconds in the third period to tie the game.
And we got overtime in a gold medal, winner-take-all game to conclude what has been a fantastic tournament.
It took 6:22 of back and forth action in OT for the game to come to an end, and it was Guenther the hero with the gold medal-clinching OT GWG. It was a magnificent game between two teams loaded with future NHL stars.
