The NHL’s alumni game on Wednesday night is going to feature players who played for the host team, the Florida Panthers, against a collection of other NHL alumni. If you’re a Blackhawks fan, a bunch of these names likely ring a bell. Some… not in a good way.
Blackhawks — Panthers Crossover
Anders Eriksson‘s name hit something in the back of my brain and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why. So I looked up the defenseman on HockeyDB and was reminded that he was one of the players traded to the Blackhawks in the infamous deal that sent Chris Chelios to Detroit.
Tomas Fleischmann was also involved in an infamous deal for the Blackhawks. He came to Chicago with with Dale Weise in the deal that sent Phillip Danault to Montreal. Again, whoops!
Bryan McCabe spent one season in Chicago before he was traded for… Alexander Karpovtsev. I mean… c’mon. This just keeps getting worse. But the silver lining on this cloud, as I broke down this summer during our Trade Tree series, is the Blackhawks trading Karpovtsev for the pick that ultimately became Niklas Hjalmarsson.
Blackhawks Alumni
I shouldn’t have to tell you that Tuomo Ruutu played for the Blackhawks. Chicago drafted Ruutu ninth overall in the 2001 NHL Draft. He was traded for Andrew Ladd, which actually worked out well for the Blackhawks in 2010.
Trevor Daley appeared in 29 games for the Blackhawks during the 2015-16 season after he was acquired from Dallas in the trade that sent Patrick Sharp to the Stars. He was traded to Pittsburgh for Rob Scuderi later that season after the experiment crashed and burned.
And Henrik Samuelsson appeared in 65 games for the IceHogs. We’ll allow it.
