Toronto Fans Tossed, Chicago’s CHL Prospects Advance, Rockford’s Big Friday, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Thursday night was an opportunity for four teams to get even in their respective first-round playoff series. The Toronto Maple Leafs were able to get that done — though they beat a Tampa team that was without Viktor Hedman and Erik Cernak because of injuries. The New Jersey Devils were not; they got blown out on their home ice again. And Patrick Kane had a big night for the Rangers, including his first playoff goal for a team other than the Blackhawks.

Here’s tonight’s schedule to start your weekend:

  • The Lightning-Maple Leafs game went off the rails in the third period with Toronto putting it on the Bolts pretty good. The final score was 7-2 in favor of the Maple Leafs, but it was the 14 penalties that were called in the third period where things really got interesting. And it wasn’t just the players that wanted the smoke. Several fans were assisted in leaving the building when they forgot to act like fans/adults.
  • I think we would all benefit from fans staying at a safe distance. And making sure they have protective head gear if they do get too close to the action. Like… this Blackhawks fan nine years ago when Winnipeg was in town.
  • Ben Pope nailed the sentiment and perspective I hope many Blackhawks fans have watching these playoffs. Sam Lafferty picked up an assist in Toronto’s blow-out win last night. Jake McCabe skated heavy minutes. Brandon Hagel has been a dangerous forward for Tampa. There are former Blackhawks all over these playoffs. But, here, now, it’s about the future in Chicago.
  • Ethan Del Mastro and the Sarnia Sting finished a sweep of their own last night. And Del Mastro, one of my favorite Blackhawks prospects right now, has been huge. He has eight assists and a plus-nine rating through 10 games this postseason.
  • Del Mastro joins the Blackhawks’ three prospects in Seattle — Kevin Korchinski, Colton Dach and Nolan Allan — and Samuel Savoie with Gatineau in the next round of their respective CHL playoffs. Yesterday I looked at how Dach, who appears to be healthy finally, is playing really well for the Thunderbirds. Seattle’s Western Conference Championship series against Kamloops begins on Saturday, April 29.
  • The Rockford IceHogs have a chance to finish off a first-round series win in Iowa tonight. They needed overtime in Game One on Wednesday night in Rockford, but can put a lid on the best-of-three series tonight. Good luck to the IceHogs!
  • Finally, there’s a possibility of a massive blockbuster trade in baseball this summer and the Cubs could very well be in the mix. Should the Cubs make the enormous offer to acquire Shohei Ohtani? What would it take? Michael nailed it yesterday. Give it a read.
