We had four NHL playoff games on the schedule last night and three playoff games involving Blackhawks prospects — and the NFL Draft and a couple MLB games — so lots of options on Friday night for Chicago sports fans. At the NHL level, Dallas and Carolina were able to advance with wins last night. Florida forced a Game Seven in Boston and the defending champion Avalanche will host the Kraken in a Game Seven in Denver as well.
Tonight, the Leafs, Devils and Oilers can advance in the NHL.
- If you didn’t catch the Panthers-Bruins game last night, I am so, so sorry. Florida took a 2-1 lead to the room after the first period and a 3-2 lead into the third period as they tried to survive to play one more game in Boston this weekend. Boston got the ridiculous, between-the-legs goal from David Pastrnak in the second period. Then the third period happened.
- SEVEN combined goals from the two teams in the third period. Boston actually scored three of the first four goals in the final period to take a brief 5-4 lead. How brief? 27 seconds. The Bruins took the lead on a short-handed goal from Jake DeBrusk only to see Matthew Tkachuk score a power play goal on the next shift. The final goal of the night came off the amazing sequence below.
- Cale Makar returned from his one-game suspension to help the Avs force a Game Seven in their barn this weekend. In the process, he picked up two assists to become the franchise’s all-time leader in postseason helpers. Makar has 65 points in 60 career playoff games, including a now-franchise record 49 assists. As a reminder: he’s still only 24 years old.
- The Rockford IceHogs lost Game One of their best-of-five second-round series against the Texas Stars last night. The game was tied at three in the middle of the third period when we had a near line brawl, after which Texas would score the only two goals. Jalen Luypen made his professional debut, starting as the fourth line center for Rockford last night.
- Joey Anderson, D.J. Busdeker, and Bobby Lynch handled the scoring for the IceHogs in the 5-3 loss. Game Two is at 4 PM CT in Rockford on Sunday.
- It sounds like Anders Sorensen wasn’t terribly happy with Lukas Reichel‘s performance last night. Again, after spending more than a full month in the NHL — the longest stretch of his career thus far — the expectation was that Reichel would dial his game up a notch in the AHL playoffs. Looks like he’ll need to find that gear in the next day or so.
- Ethan Del Mastro and the Sarnia Sting lost the first game of their OHL semifinal series last night.
- And Samuel Savoie and the Gatineau Olympiques also lost their playoff game last night, starting their QMJHL semifinal series with a 5-2 loss to Quebec.
- The US will play a semifinal game in the U18 World Championship on Saturday morning. If you’re awake and have NHL Network this is absolutely worth watching because most of this roster is going to be an NHL draft pick this summer — including Will Smith, who many feel will be the fifth overall pick in June.
- Finally, y’all really need to be following our NFL Draft coverage. One more day, four more rounds. The Bears are doing work.
