Dallas Stays Live, Seattle Wins Big, Hall of Famer Huet, USA Upset at Worlds, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

We’ll have a Game 6 in the Western Conference Final. Dallas came back from being down twice last night to send a the game to the third period tied at one. Then Ty Dellandrea scored twice in 87 seconds and the game was effectively over. Dallas was 0-3 in the series with Jamie Benn in the lineup; they’re 2-0 with him suspended. Maybe the captain should tap out of two more?

The Seattle Thunderbirds opened their Memorial Cup with a strong 6-3 win against Peterborough. Nolan Allan scored what held up as the game-winning goal (below) and Kevin Korchinski added an assists on Seattle’s fifth goal of the night. Colton Dach was plus-two with three shots on net. Their next game is against Quebec on Monday night. Quebec beat the host team from Kamloops 8-3 on Friday night.

On SportsNet last night, Elliotte Friedman reported be believes Pittsburgh is just waiting for former Toronto GM Kyle Dubas to make a decision. And he believes the Rangers want to hire Peter Laviolette about their head coaching vacancy. Nashville might be in the market for a new head coach, but that wasn’t confirmed.

The IIHF inducted new members into its Hall of Fame on Sunday morning. Among those honored was former Blackhawks netminder Cristobal Huet.

Saturday morning, Canada beat Latvia in a game that was likely closer than many expected at the World Championship. Adam Fantilli scored this gorgeous game winner to get Canada to the gold medal game.

The United States played Germany for the second berth in the gold medal game later in the morning. The game went to overtime where Germany was able to score the game-winner. So the United States will face Latvia for the bronze while Canada plays Germany for gold.

How about this fun story for some Bleacher Nation crossover action! Weatherford College sophomore first baseman/left-handed pitcher Robin Villeneuve is having a historic season at the JUCO level, helping the Coyotes advance to the NJCAA Division I World Series. But he didn’t even play high school baseball because his high school didn’t have a team! Like Tom Glavine before him, hockey might be a path to baseball glory.

“Hockey helped with my conditioning and athletic side,” he said. “My hometown has always been a hockey town because we were very good most of the years. When I played, we were always ranked in the top three teams in the province and a couple of my ex-teammates and good friends got drafted in the NHL.”

Finally, there was crazy drama in south Florida last night. Derrick White hit a buzzer beater to extend the Celtics’ comeback bid all the way to a Game 7. As a reminder, they — like Dallas in the NHL — were down 3-0 and are trying to do the unthinkable.
