Even before the Blackhawks made their plans to rebuild known, there were whispers about Patrick Kane needing to get something done to help an ailing hip that had been a lingering issue. On Thursday, we found out that Kane had work done to help prolong his career.

Kane, 34, was the only No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the history of the organization. That will change this summer, when the Blackhawks presumably select Connor Bedard after winning the NHL Draft Lottery.
Since he was selected first in the 2007 NHL Draft, Kane appeared in 1,161 games for the Blackhawks before he was traded to the New York Rangers before this past season’s trade deadline. He has produced 1,237 points in 1,180 games in his career.
For the first time in his career, Kane is headed into uncharted waters — he’s an unrestricted free agent this summer. If the timeline of 4-6 months is correct (I’m not questioning the doctor), he would be able to come back (counts on fingers) somewhere between October and December, meaning he could miss significant time for the first time in his career. Kane has already said returning to Chicago isn’t in the cards, however.
