Blackhawks Tuesday Scrimmage Takeaways: Marcel Scores Twice, Bedard’s Sauce, Defensive Lapses, More

Something about playing two, 25-minute periods. Marcel Marcel (White Team) scored the only goal in the first half of the scrimmage. Cole Guttman (Red Team) scored early in the second half to tie the scrimmage but Marcel added his second goal just moments later. The White Team’s top line was held quiet fairly well until Andreas Athanasiou flipped a pretty backhand over Drew Commesso to extend their lead to 3-1.

With about eight minutes left in the scrimmage, Connor Bedard bounced off Nolan Allan (note: size will become less of an issue when you watch him play and not just read about his height) and flipped a gorgeous pass to Ryan Donato for a tying goal.

Athanasiou scored on the following shift to get the White Team’s lead back. Wyatt Kaiser ripped a filthy wrister to give the White Team a 5-3 lead with about 90 seconds left and at that point we went into garbage time. That shot was nice — and something we haven’t seen as much from Kaiser. His confidence keeps growing. An empty net goal made it 6-3.

  • After five goals in a brief skate yesterday, it absolutely appeared the defense took it personally. And, with fewer skaters on each bench there were more opportunities for reps — and mistakes. Kevin Korchinski, Nolan Allan and Wyatt Kaiser all had a couple mistakes in the first half with the increased intensity. However, I thought Ethan Del Mastro once again showed a lot of composure and skated the puck very well; he created a nifty little scoring chance for himself during a change late in the first half.
  • During the first half, Connor Bedard flipped a pass about ten feet in the air from behind his own blue line over the opposite blue line with enough English on it to hit a streaking Ryan Donato in stride. I haven’t seen a Bears quarterback lead a receiver like that since Erik Kramer left town. No goal on the play but the pass was another oh wow moment that showed a glimpse of what 98 can do.
  • Jason Dickinson (maintenance) didn’t skate so Brett Seney was between Nick Foligno and Corey Perry. That line matched up with the Bedard line most often and Seney gave the phenom all he could handle at the dot.
  • I thought Colton Dach had a good morning. He covered Seth Jones’ @$$ on a rush once early in the scrimmage and threw his body around effectively. He did try to dance Connor Murphy at one point and found himself on the glass and the puck departing the other way. He’ll learn, but he’s definitely playing a more physical game this year.
  • Boris Katchouk showed up to play. He was more physical and was picking pockets all over the ice during the first half of the scrimmage. He also got put on his backside by Reese Johnson and got beat a couple times, but the effort was noticeably improved.
