Kevin Korchinski Excited to Make Blackhawks Debut

When the Blackhawks made their final cuts on Sunday and Monday, Connor Bedard wasn’t the only recent high draft pick who found himself getting ready to fly to Pittsburgh. Kevin Korchinski made the team and will get to show what he can do on the blue line.

Korchinski said after the Blackhawks’ practice on Monday that they informed him he was making the team on Sunday.

“It’s amazing,” Korchinski said. “It’s a dream come true. Something I’ve dreamed about as a kid. It’s going to be really cool. Obviously there will be some learning moments but overall it’s super exciting with family there.”

Korchinski said it’s been a quick turnaround for him and his family with the game in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. His parents and sister will be there to see him make his regular-season NHL debut.

One of the things he admitted he’ll have to be careful of is being star struck on the NHL ice for the first time. He noted the number of future Hall of Famers on the other end of the rink, especially Sidney Crosby and Erik Karlsson — neither of whom he has ever seen play in person.

Head coach Luke Richardson said Monday the team has not committed to anything regarding Korchinski’s season. He could stay for the duration, or he could find himself back in Seattle skating another season in the WHL. That will be determined by his play.

Korchinski knows that reality, and is excited by the opportunity to show the team he’s ready to be an every night NHL player.

“At this level you have to earn your place every night,” he said. “For me, I’m just trying to earn that spot every day in practice, in the gym and in games. I just wanna prove that I belong here.”
